When two Holmdel student journalists learned about New Jersey’s New Voices Law at the GSSPA Press Day at Rutgers University, they decided to take action. They approached their administration to make sure that their old publications policy was updated to follow the state’s mandate that they line up with the law’s protections in all NJ school districts.
They succeeded, after a year long battle, with the support of the GSSPA and SPLC. Kim Hong and Andrew Hum are to be commended for their determination and courage.
They told their story in an article that they wrote for the Student Press Law Center. It is reprinted here with the permission of The SPLC.
