The Garden State Scholastic Press Association held its annual Fall Student Press Day on October 27 on the campus of Rutgers New Brunswick. The year’s theme was “Keeping our Seat at the Table: If Not Us, Who?”
The keynote panel, “Covering Campus Protests: Student Journalists Tell Their Stories,” featured three university students – Alesandra “Dre” Gonzales, Natalie Lahr, and Shea Vance – who detailed their experiences about how they covered campus protests and the legal support they needed. The panel was moderated by John Tagliareni, a founding member of the GSSPA.
Student newspapers and yearbooks received awards from GSSPA’s annual contest during the Showcase of Excellence. Thirty-two educational sessions, plus student roundtables, and the Patrick Tuohey Write-Off Contest were offered by 40 speakers from educational and professional backgrounds, the GSSPA board, and members of the GSSPA’s inaugural team of NJ All Stars. Seven hundred eighteen students and 78 advisers from 47 schools attended this year’s conference.
