Armed with a written code of ethics, Emily Wyrwa spoke to fellow students about moral and professional standards in high school journalism. Wyrwa is the Technology Editor of The Fanscotian, the newspaper of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in Scotch Plains, NJ. She brought with her to the conference the Model Code of Ethics for High School Journalists published by the National Scholastic Press Association. Wyrwa led a discussion about responsible journalism at her round table using the code as a guide.
Students helping students is a popular theme at the annual Garden State Scholastic Press Association’s Fall Press Day. Dozens of student journalists led round table discussions on various scholastic topics at Rutger University’s Busch Campus Center on Oct. 28. Student leaders volunteered their time and effort to prepare mini-lessons and talk on topics of their choice. Reporting online, censoring content, and tackling tough topics were just a few of the subjects discussed among peers.
